This post is long overdue! But at least it’s finally posted! 🙂

I baked baklava for the first time in my life! It’s way simpler than I thought it would be, and it made a great Christmas treat for our neighbors.

Start by mixing some cinnamon with 4 cups of walnuts and set aside. Butter a rectangular baking pan.

Unwrap your fillo dough package and lay the sheets flat

Brush the whole surface of the first sheet with melted butter

Grab the buttered sheet and the one underneath it and place both of them in the pan turning the buttered sheet over the other sheet, repeating the process until you have total of 6 sheets in the pan, three of them buttered

Brush the sheet with butter and arrange the nuts in a layer. Cover the nuts with two buttered sheets of fillo dough. Add another layer of walnuts, then two more buttered fillo sheets. Repeat this step until you’re out of walnuts. Top with 4 more buttered fillo sheets, ending with a buttered top.

Cut a diagonal diamond pattern in the baklava using a very sharp knife.

Bake for 45 min. or until golden brown

While the baklava is baking, mix together the butter, honey, water, sugar, and vanilla in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat.

This is how it should look when it’s done. You can tell that I forgot to brush the top sheet with butter 🙂

Drizzle half the saucepan evenly all over the top and allow the baklava to sit and absorb the syrup a while before adding a little more (you might have some left over). Let the baklava cool…
